Sacramento authorities are investigating a shooting that took place on April 18 2026 at Howe Community Park at the moment officers were dissolving an unauthorized event of hundreds of attendees.

How It Started

Sacramento County law enforcement were first called to the Arden-Arcade park shortly before 6:30 PM after getting calls of individuals who may have had concealed firearms. Following that, another report was received regarding a reported physical confrontation taking place within the park grounds.

Aerial units was sent to survey the area but could not confirm any ongoing fight. Even so, it was evident that hundreds of people had gathered without authorization without official sanction.

The Shooting Itself

Responding units moved to clear the area by setting up around the park's perimeter and broadcasting over loudspeakers instructing attendees to go home. Approximately 15 minutes were allowed for attendees to disperse.

At the height of the dispersal effort that upwards of 20 gunshots rang out. The barrage of gunfire caused mass panic. Officers swiftly started identifying shooting victims.

The victims — including a female and three males all believed to be in their early to late twenties — were airlifted or driven to hospitals in the Sacramento area. Medical personnel reported that two victims sustained immediate injuries, one sustained moderate wounds, and one sustained minor gunshot wounds. According to authorities, each of the four victims was stable.

Sacramento Metro Fire were called to the scene and assisted with medical triage shooting victims at the park.

What Investigators Found

Most of the gunfire appears to have occurred along the Cottage Way corridor alongside the local Home Depot at the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Detectives identified further ballistic evidence in the form of shell casings on the Cottage Way roadway. Bullet holes were identified in the iron fence near the Home Depot. These discoveries pointed to that a second shooter had been discharging rounds toward the south from Cottage Way toward the Home Depot store. That Home Depot location was locked down while the scene was active. Forensic investigators and law enforcement detectives worked tirelessly throughout the night.

Arrests Made

Information obtained over police scanner frequencies revealed that a Kia had been detained in nearby Solano County. Four occupants were stopped and detained. Deputies were traveling to Solano County to return them to Sacramento for further questioning. Surveillance footage made clear that the shooting involved two separate gunmen.
